San Juan Group Reunion 2009

Save the dates. The inaugural San Juan Group (Don Murray ‘59, Tony Dunne ‘60, Mike Develle ‘60, Kaki Torrens ‘60, Bill Lenoir ‘61, Bill Peffer ‘61, Jake Kancavicus ‘61, John Stuart ‘61, Walt Colby ‘62, Pete Anderson ‘62, Dave Kleinhen ‘62, Dan Smythe ‘62, Harley Jordan ‘62, Ned Brush ‘63, and Dave Carrier ‘65 and wives) reuned in San Juan, Puerto Rico in December, 2007. We intend to reune every 1 1/2 to 2 years and will focus on our classes, ‘59 – ‘65, but all MIT SAE’s are welcome to join us.

Keeping in mind the San Juan success factors we have come up with a trip to the Seattle area (Develles will be the Kaki for this). Start and stop dates will be flexible as in San Juan and the core will be Friday night through Sunday brunch. We are looking at Sept 11-13, 2009 with +/- 3days of optional activities. August and September are the good months in Seattle (good = not rainy). After Labor Day, the crowds are less and the prices are somewhat lower. Basically the trip would look like this:

Wednesday or Thursday, September 10 or 11 – day outing to San Juan Islands (or Anacortes) for whale watching, kayaking, biking, and/or hiking; from there to Develle’s house for drinks and dinner

Friday, September 11, 2009 – reception, dinner, singing, and dancing at a local restaurant near the Seattle hotel

Saturday, September 12, 2009 – reception, “chapter meeting”, dinner, singing, and dancing at the hotel

Sunday, September 13, 2009 – brunch in the hotel

Seattle area optional activities  (pre, post, or during)

  • Stroll through Market Place (reminiscent of Old Town with a fish market flavor)
  • Shopping (upscale, downscale, window)
  • Tour of Boeing’s 747 Assembly Building
  • Tour of a Russian submarine
  • Winery visit, tasting, and tour
  • A day in Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands, tour the town, bike, hike, etc
  • Drive about in the Cascades
  • Rent-a-bike
  • Attend a chocolate/wine event
  • View and take part in glass blowing

2 to 3 day optional trip to Victoria, Canada  (don’t forget your passport)

  • Getting there by ferry, seaplane, plane, or drive
  • Hotel in downtown Victoria

In Victoria options include Maritime Museum, Undersea gardens, horse carriage tour, Royal British Columbia Museum, Seaplane ride, Chinatown, Art galleries, Craigdarroch Castle, zoo, Royal Wax Museum, Miniature World, Beacon Hill Park, whale watch, kayak, rent-a-bike, deep sea fishing, sailing, and walking tours.

Outside of Victoria options include Butchart Gardens (a must), Butterfly Gardens, drive around Vancouver Island, visit Toffino (2nd largest city on Vancouver Island), explore the Gulf Islands, hike on the west coast, horseback riding, and paragliding.
